Kenny Loggins topped the charts in 1984 for four weeks with Footloose, the title track from the movie starring Kevin Bacon. There are quite a few shots from the movie in the video. Footloose was Loggin’s biggest hit. Everybody cut footloose!

David Lee Roth left Van Halen and had a solo hit with Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody in 1985. The outrageous video is classic Diamond Dave. The song appears on his Crazy from the Heat album, which is the same title as his autobiography. The song is actually a cover of two extremely old songs, Just a Gigolo from 1929 and I Ain’t Got Nobody from 1915.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun from Cyndi Lauper’s 1983 album She’s So Unusual. This was Cyndi’s debut single from her first solo album. The video was filmed for less than $35,000 and includes Captain Lou Albano as her father and her actual mother playing herself. Girls Just Want to Have Fun hit #1 in 9 different countries and #2 in the US and UK.

As if you didn’t know, the New Kids on the Block consisted of Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood, Joey McIntyre, and brothers Jordan and Jonathan Knight. Hangin’ Tough is from NKOTB’s second album of the same name. It was ranked at #46 on Blender’s list of the “50 Worst Songs Ever”. I disagree. The video is basically a compilation of some live performances with some pretty radical synched up dance moves from the boyband.

Billy Ocean had yet another number one song with 1988’s Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car. The song’s popularity was increased by the cutting-edge (for the time) video, which featured cartoon mixed with live-action sequences.

Bananarama had a seemingly endless stream of upbeat dance pop hit songs in the 1980’s and Venus was no exception. Venus was actually a cover of Shocking Blue’s 1969 hit. The video for Venus features the ladies of Bananarama dressed up in a variety of very 80’s costumes. Fun!

What’s Love Got to Do With It is from Tina Turner’s huuuuuge album Private Dancer. The video features Tina strutting around in New York City in a mini-skirt with big 80’s hair. Tina was 45 years old when this song went to #1, making her the oldest person to have a number one hit (a record since broken by Cher and others).
