We are living in a material world and in 1985 Madonna was a Material Girl. Madonna has stated that if she knew this was going to become her nickname, she would have never recorded the song. Madge met Sean Penn during the filming of the Material Girl video which is a takeoff of a Marilyn Monroe performance from Gentleman Prefer Blondes.
